FAQs
What types of biospecimens are available in the DSA Biobank?
The DSA Biobank primarily provides blood-derived biospecimens, including serum, plasma, and DNA. Additional biospecimens (e.g., RNA, PBMCs, saliva) may be available or supported through custom cohort development based on study needs. Our team works with researchers to align available inventory or develop cohorts to meet specific study requirements.
How are biospecimens collected?
Biospecimens are collected through clinical collection sites and coordinated home phlebotomy when appropriate, enabling both in-person and remote participation.
Who can participate?
Individuals with Down syndrome, along with their parents or siblings, are eligible to participate. This supports the development of structured family cohorts (e.g., dyads and triads).
What age groups are represented?
DSA Biobank includes both pediatric and adult participants. Collection methods vary based on age and logistics, including on-site and home collection options.
Is clinical or health data available?
Yes. Participants complete health profiles that can be linked to biospecimens, providing additional context for research use.
HOW ARE BIOSPECIMENS PROCESSED AND STORED?
All biospecimens are collected and processed through Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center using standardized protocols to ensure quality and consistency.
HOW IS PARTICIPANT PRIVACY PROTECTED?
Participants are assigned unique identifiers, and all biospecimens and data are de-identified prior to release. No personally identifying information is shared with researchers.
.
WHAT CONSENT FRAMEWORK IS USED?
Participants provide broad consent for future research use of biospecimens, with assent obtained when applicable.
WHAT ETHICAL STANDARDS APPLY?
All biospecimen collection and use adhere to established ethical standards, including informed consent, privacy protections, and institutional oversight.
CAN YOU SUPPORT CUSTOM STUDY NEEDS?
Yes. We work with researchers to align available samples or support prospective recruitment based on defined inclusion criteria.
WHAT ARE THE COSTS ASSOCIATED WITH ACCESSING BIOSPECIMENS?
DSA Biobank operates on a cost-recovery model. Fees vary depending on sample type, cohort structure, and study requirements. Researchers should submit a Researcher Request Form to receive a feasibility assessment and pricing based on study needs.
HOW DO I GET STARTED?
Submit a Researcher Request Form or email researcher@dsachieves.org to discuss your study. Our team will follow up with next steps, feasibility, and timing (typically 4-6 weeks for sample access and delivery depending on study scope and availability).
