DownSyndrome Achieves Statement on the Proposed Dismantling of the Department of Education

Our mission at DownSyndrome Achieves is to advance research, resources, and support policies that empower individuals with Down syndrome and their families. A strong, well-supported education system is fundamental to ensuring every child—regardless of ability—has the opportunity to learn, grow, and thrive.

The Department of Education (DOE) plays a crucial role in upholding key protections and programs such as the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), which guarantees access to special education services and ensures that students with Down syndrome receive the individualized support they need. Additionally, the DOE provides critical funding to local school districts and supports research that improves educational outcomes for students with disabilities.

Dismantling the DOE jeopardizes these essential programs and threatens the stability of special education services and the rights of students with disabilities. Moreover, shifting responsibility over education to the States and local communities opens the door to inequitable policies across states that may leave vulnerable populations like people with Down syndrome unable to receive the services and support they need.

We strongly urge policymakers to preserve and strengthen these vital protections rather than dismantle the very systems that support policies ensuring a fair and supportive education for all. We also urge people with Down syndrome and their families to help take action by contacting their State and Federal legislators.

The future of children with Down syndrome depends on an education system that upholds their rights, funds their opportunities, and empowers them to reach their full potential.
